Leather products date back in history to around 1200 B.C. and have been known to be sourced in Europe, Egypt, Asia and North America. Primitive man first started using skins of different animals for protection against adverse climate conditions for warmth and protection. In some cases, owning and wearing a leather garment, shoes or belt represented your social status. The most prolific advancements in the tannery process came during the middle of the last century, when this process started to include chrome salts and also when the tanning process transitioned from a pit to a rotating drum. The outcome decreased the processing time from a period of 8 – 12 months to today’s 2 -3 days. Most of the rawhides that we offer come from the Alpine region and Central European area where it is recognized as one of the top sources of quality livestock and breeding for leather products in the world.
Many people are under the belief that animals are slaughtered just for the production of leather, but the fact is that leather is actually a “waste product” from the meat industry. We only work with producers where the animals are never lost due to the production of leather products.

Leather Origins offers a variety of quality commercial leather in 125 different colors with thicknesses ranging between .9 – 3.0 mm. These leather hides come in a variety of patterns and grainage that have an aniline or semi-aniline finish, natural grained leather and beautifully embossed leather. Most of our leathers include water and stain resistant protective finishes or this can be added at a minimal up charge. Special leather colors are available on request. Leather hides can be ordered in whole hides or die cut parts.
